Yes you are required to complete a boating safety class to operate a jet ski. I hope that your parents will help you get your license, just as if you were going to drive a car. Good luck!

In Michigan those 14 years of age or older and born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate.
You can do on line at : http://www.boat-ed.com/mi/index.htm

I’m not sure of the rules in your location but my advice would be “why not”. I appreciate it costs money but you will gain confidence and something that you can, at least, put on your CV/resume.
Taking a boat safety course never killed anyone, not taking one has.
